Mascot Watch

Southeast Missouri State University

Old nickname: Indians for the men's teams, Otahkians for the women's teams

New nickname: Redhawks

New mascot: Rowdy the Redhawk

Issue: The university has had no mascot for 18 years because of concerns that the nicknames perpetuated stereotypes about American Indians. Alumni had long stifled efforts at change, citing tradition.
