Many Virginia Tech Students Will Skip Exams, and Professors Are Relieved

Many Virginia Tech students are taking advantage of the university’s offer to let them skip end-of-semester exams and accept as their final course grades whatever grades they had earned before the April 16 killings.

The Associated Press reports that only 10 to 15 of the 70 students in an introductory sociology course have told the professor, Bradley R. Hertel, that they wanted to take the final. Mr. Hertel said that was fine with him because he is having as much trouble concentrating as they are. “I’ve been reeling from this myself — I’ve been slow in moving forward on things,” he said. —Lawrence Biemiller
