Many Serious Problems in Scholarly Publishing

"Presses Seek Fiscal Relief in Subsidies for Authors" (The Chronicle, August 13) described the pressures that scholarly publishers are under in their fight to survive in less-than-ideal economic times. It is true that costs are escalating, and that 90 institutions bear the brunt of those costs, but other issues -- especially the lack of a unified effort to digitize content -- are more significant. ...
