Making It Harder to Become a Lawyer

Raising the minimum score required to pass state bar exams may screen out a few less-qualified candidates for law licenses ("Raising the Bar," The Chronicle, September 10). It certainly will reduce the number of lawyers.

Despite the large number of lawyers in the United States, many millions of citizens lack access to adequate legal services in noncriminal matters, and the problem is particularly severe in inner cities and rural areas. Graduates of law schools
