Making Animals Matter
Last spring, I took time off from my research as a Fulbright scholar in Mexico, where I was pursuing my studies of the relationship between the humanities and environmental issues, to join a team of biologists and hounds in chasing and capturing a wild jaguar. We needed nearly two weeks of hard work and unflagging persistence to locate, track, and finally tree the jaguar in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, part of the vast jungle along Mexico's southern border with Belize.
