Making Admissions Decisions in the Name of Diversity

Bob Laird's essay demonstrates how long and hard he and his colleagues at the University of California at Berkeley worked at "Bending Admissions to Political Ends" (The Review, May 17). ...
Laird laments the fact that the ban on overt and heavy-handed preferences has slowed Berkeley's ability to return to and go beyond the 1997 numbers. What he overlooks is the fact that the colorblind admissions process of 1998 simply spread the same number of minority students
