Loyola of Chicago May Eliminate Classics Dept.
Loyola University Chicago, troubled by operating deficits and declining enrollment, is on the verge of eliminating its department of classical studies, one of the foundations of the Jesuit education that the institution has been emphasizing in its marketing.
Professors in the department were told this month by the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School that the department had too few student majors and did not bring in enough money through tuition and grants.
