Louisiana Lawmakers Slash College Spending
Louisiana lawmakers gave final approval last week to a bill that cuts $71.4-million from public colleges and squeezes $5.5-million in surplus funds from a popular merit-based scholarship program to help close a $959-million hole blown through the state budget by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The siphoning of money from the Tuition Opportunity Program for Students is unlikely to affect any participants because there has been a drop in the number of eligible students attending state
