'Looking for Sex in Shakespeare'
It's hardly difficult to find the sex in Shakespeare. Thomas and Henrietta Bowdler knew how much sex there was. Too much, the Bowdler siblings thought, as they prepared their Family Shakespeare in the early 1800s and gave English an eponym for expurgation.
Today a kind of reverse bowdlerization may be occurring. In Stanley Wells's Looking for Sex in Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press), the Shakespearean scholar explores the new and, he argues, sometimes dubious sexual shadings
