Loan-Subsidy Cuts Would Leave Sallie Mae Profitable, Study Finds

The subsidy cuts being considered by Congress for the federal student-loan program would leave Sallie Mae, the nation's dominant lender, still making a profit, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service.

Sallie Mae realizes a gain of about 0.72 of a percentage point, or 72 basis points, from student loans it issues through the federally guaranteed program, according to the study by Darryl E. Getter, an analyst with the research service.
