Loan Forgiveness Now Available to Victims of September 11 Terrorist Attacks

The spouses and parents of people killed or permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, may apply for forgiveness of federal student loans under regulations published today in the Federal Register. The regulations, which carry out a portion of a law passed this year, describe who is eligible for the loan discharge and what documentation they must provide to the holder of the loan. The forgiveness applies to PLUS loans taken out on behalf of the victims, both civilians and emergency responders, and the portion of a joint-consolidation loan incurred on behalf of a victim.
