Although I certainly agree with Carlin Romano that Americans in general know little or nothing about literature from sub-Saharan Africa, I wonder what qualifies him to be the judge of the "authenticity" of various African texts ("Ignoring Authentic African Literature Means Ignoring Africans," The Chronicle Review, December 16). The realities of both colonization and postcolonial diaspora make it extraordinarily difficult to define the African novel or novelist. And no
