A professor of literature at the University of California at Santa Cruz has won the National Book Award for poetry, the National Book Foundation announced on Wednesday night. Nathaniel Mackey won for his book Splay Anthem (New Directions). He was one of four poets with academic affiliations to be finalists for the poetry prize.
