Background: Libby Sander covers college athletics for The Chronicle of Higher Education.Before joining The Chronicle, in 2007, she was a freelance reporter for The New York Times, writing breaking news and feature stories out of the Midwest bureau, in Chicago. Before that, she covered Chicago’s state and federal courts and the legal industry, first for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and then for Chicago Lawyer magazine.

She also wrote news and feature stories on a freelance basis for Chicago Athlete and the Daily Southtown (now The SouthtownStar), both in the Chicago area, as well as for The Capital Times, in Madison, Wis., and MTV.com. Before she became a reporter, Sander worked for nonprofit organizations in the New York City area and in Washington.

Sander holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Bryn Mawr College, where she was a two-time captain of the college’s Division III field-hockey team.
