Leaving the 'W' Behind

The name seems to spell "all-female," but men have been attending the Mississippi University for Women since 1982. Now some officials are saying that "The W," as it is affectionately known, is alienating the M's.

In the university's recently concluded search for a new president, the three finalists all suggested that renaming the institution might help reverse a declining enrollment, which has fallen to 2,500 students from a high of 3,000 in the late 1990s.
