Leaving Kazakhstan With Cash Costs a Professor Dearly

After several hours of detention at an airport in Kazakhstan on charges of smuggling, three days in a hospital, and weeks of waiting for court hearings, Victor A. Skormin, a professor of electrical engineering at the State University of New York at Binghamton, returned to the United States on Sunday. The cost of leaving a country he had visited as a guest lecturer: about $16,000.

His is a cautionary tale of academic travel to a country that was part of the former Soviet Union.
