Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents is looking to tighten its oversight of the president in the hiring and firing of top administrators, according to The Ann Arbor News. The regents voted in June to create a new committee that will consult with the president on terminations and performance reviews of vice presidents.
The university has been shaken this year by criticism of its handling of information about the killing of a student, Laura Dickinson, in a dormitory room last December, allegedly by another student. The board has investigated the incident, and the U.S. Department of Education is conducting its own inquiry. John A. Fallon III, the university’s president, placed the vice president for student affairs, James F. Vick, on paid leave in the wake of the controversy. But Mr. Fallon has been criticized for what some people say is an attempt to make Mr. Vick a scapegoat for the university’s blunders.
Board members had previously criticized Mr. Fallon about his firing of two veteran officials. Roy E. Wilbanks, a regent, said the board’s intention was not to take away presidential authority, but to “at least create discussions” about personnel moves. “The process we have followed disturbs me greatly,” Mr. Wilbanks told the newspaper. —Paul Fain
