Lawrence H. Summers is a brave man ("Lawrence Summers and His Tough Questions," April 26). ... He has dared to question the academic performance of both professors and students. ...
What this involves is opening the curtains of illusion behind which American higher education, like the Emerald City of Oz, operates. One such illusion is that all high-school graduates -- no matter how unmotivated, unprepared, or untalented -- are entitled ... to a college diploma.
