Texas legislators have rejected Gov. Rick Perry’s more drastic proposals for reshaping the governing board at financially troubled Texas Southern University, the Houston Chronicle reported today.
Mr. Perry, a Republican, had called for the university to be placed under state-appointed conservatorship, a plan that would have required legislative approval. But that option appears to be off the table, the newspaper reported, unless a legislative audit committee meets and decides to grant the governor that power — a step considered unlikely. A compromise to allow the governor to replace university regents with a smaller, reform-minded board in times of crisis also fell apart before the Legislature adjourned, on Monday.
Mr. Perry, however, will get to fill all the vacancies on the nine-member board, after the previous regents resigned under pressure. —Karin Fischer
