Lawmakers Praise NIH, but Ask Whether It Needs Another Big Budget Boost
Congress wants assurances that the agency is giving the government the most bang for its many bucks
Officials at the National Institutes of Health must do a better job of explaining why they need yet another big budget increase for the 2001 fiscal year, said members of a House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee last week.
President Clinton has proposed $1-billion more for the N.I.H., which would take its budget to $18.8-billion, up 5.6 percent.
