Lawmakers Defy Bush on Executive Records
Opposing President Bush, Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced legislation this month to ensure that scholars and the news media would have access to presidential records. Academic researchers praised the measure, which would overturn an executive order by Mr. Bush to give sitting and former presidents the right to block public access to the records of a previous administration.
The legislation would reaffirm the Presidential Records Act of 1978,
