Lawmakers Approve Defense Budget

Congress agreed this month to a $355.1-billion spending bill for the Department of Defense that would provide $11.468-billion for scientific research in the 2003 fiscal year. President Bush said he will sign the measure.

Total spending on basic research would increase by 8.7 percent, or $120-million, to $1.495-billion, over the amount allocated for the 2002 fiscal year. Spending on applied research would grow by 12.5 percent, or $512-million, to $4.599-billion.
