Lawmakers Agree to Soften Some Provisions of Patriot Act
The U.S. Senate is poised to approve a long-term renewal of the USA Patriot Act this month after a small group of Republicans successfully pressed the Bush administration to add civil-liberties protections to the controversial antiterrorism legislation. The House of Representatives is expected to follow and also approve the legislation.
In December the Republican senators joined Democrats to block a vote on renewing the law. The act was hastily enacted in the aftermath of the September
