A federal monitor looking into the host of problems at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has asked the state’s attorney general to push along the university’s lagging search for a new president, the Associated Press reported. The monitor, a former federal judge named Herbert J. Stern, said the lack of a permanent leader was hurting the university’s recruitment, morale, and financial standing. One thing Mr. Stern didn’t mention as a source of trouble were the allegations of sweetheart deals, financial mismanagement, and possible criminal misconduct at the health-sciences university that he and other investigators keep uncovering—problems that recently led to the university’s being placed on probation by its accreditor (The Chronicle, June 28).
