Laboratory Animals After Hurricane Katrina

While Rebecca Aronauer's article quite rightly highlights the very real heroics of many humans, it is unclear that the claims of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals really are unjustified ("Animal-Rights Groups Demand Punishment for LSU Over Lab Animals' Deaths," The Chronicle, September 30).

If the animals suffered "cruel abandonment" and were left to drown, suffocate, or starve while there was a reasonable chance to at least euthanize them, then charges
