Lab Affiliated With MIT Tops Ranking of Best Places to Work for Postdocs

The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, an independent lab affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, topped The Scientist’s latest list of the best American job destinations for postdoctoral researchers in the life sciences.

Only three academically affiliated labs made the top 10.

The annual report is based on responses to an online survey sent to readers of the magazine who have identified themselves as “nontenured life scientists working in academia or other noncommercial research institutions.” Respondents were asked to rate their workplaces on the basis of criteria such as career-development opportunities and quality of training and mentorship.

The J. David Gladstone Institutes, an independent lab affiliated with the University of California at San Francisco, placed third on the list. The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities placed 10th.
