Jessica Platt, 20, underwent brain surgery last month after suffering seizures and a stroke during her senior year at Knox College. Doctors expect her to recover. But Ms. Platt, who was released from the hospital Thursday, was unable to attend last weekend’s commencement ceremony—the 220-mile trip from Ms. Platt’s St. Louis-area home to Knox, which is located in Galesburg, Ill., was too much for the recovering graduate.
So the Knox president, Roger L. Taylor, decided to bring the commencement to her.
According to an account in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mr. Taylor and Donna L. Jurich, an associate professor of educational studies who was an adviser to Ms. Platt, made the trip to St. Louis and performed the ceremony with Ms. Platt and her family and friends on Monday.
Mr. Taylor and Ms. Jurich pulled out all stops, wearing robes and medallions, reading excerpts from the weekend event, and handing Ms. Platt her degree before leading a benediction and small procession. —Paul Fain
