Knowledge, Not Ideology

Bruce Robbins's argument in "The Scholar in Society" (The Chronicle Review, June 8) that the work of the academy not only should be political but has always been so is based on several questionable premises, all of which have become generally accepted by many academic humanists — especially those who have controlled the direction of the Modern Language Association for the past three decades.
