Key House Republican Pushes to Renew Subsidy for Lenders of Student Loans
Rep. Howard P. (Buck) McKeon introduced legislation this month to renew a multibillion-dollar subsidy that lenders say they need to continue offering federal student loans.
Mr. McKeon, a California Republican who heads the House of Representatives subcommittee that handles higher-education issues, hopes to regain momentum in Congress for a 10-year extension of the subsidy, which is due to expire in 2003.
