Keeping Students Safe From Alcohol Abuse

To the Editor:

In reading "Binge Thinking" (November 8) and the responses to it in The Chronicle's online Colloquy, ... I was struck by the fact that alcohol education seems to be all or nothing -- either we preach abstinence or we try to protect students from the harm they might do to themselves while drunk. I am left wondering why we cannot do both. Certainly some colleges are able to balance providing alcoholfree programming and anti-alcohol messages while still getting those
