Justice for All Creatures, Great and Small
To the Editor:
Kudos to Martha C. Nussbaum for a lucid and overdue attempt to include animals within the "frontiers of justice" ("The Moral Status of Animals," The Chronicle Review, February 3). For her "capabilities approach" (or, indeed, any other) to succeed in changing deep-seated attitudes and behavior toward animals, however, it might well be necessary to confront a significant source of such attitudes and behavior, unmentioned in her otherwise thoughtful essay.
