Justice Department Clears the Sale of a Big Textbook Publisher

The antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice last week approved a giant three-way publishing deal that will result in the sale of Harcourt General to Reed Elsevier and the Thomson Corporation. As a condition of the sale, Thomson agreed to divest itself of college-textbook lines in several subjects, and at least some of its computer-based-testing business.

The deal, first announced in October, awaits approval by British antitrust authorities before it can go through. Company
