Jury Duty: When History and Life Coincide
Not long ago, I served on a jury for the first time. Most people groan when a jury summons arrives, but I was thrilled. I hadn't received one since 1964, and I had avoided serving then on grounds that I only later realized were discriminatory.
When the first summons came, I was a history graduate student in Southern California, busy teaching sections of "Western Civilization" and preparing for a trip to France for my dissertation research. I panicked. I didn't have time for jury duty!
