Judge Puts the Kibosh on Prowling Police at Washington State U.

Police officers on the lookout for illegal drugs and drinking at Washington State University will have to find another way to suss out student suspects, after a state judge ruled two weeks ago that it was a violation of students’ privacy for the police to walk around dormitories, their ears attuned to the sounds of parties and their noses open for the distinctive odor of marijuana smoke. Local prosecutors vowed to appeal the ruling. For more on the unusual case, see an Associated Press article that we missed last week.
