Jockeying Lies Ahead on Federal Budget
Members of Congress returned to work last week hoping to complete the new federal budget for the 2001 fiscal year before August.
In April, Congressional Republican leaders settled on a budget framework after some jockeying over spending goals for the National Institutes of Health and for Pell Grants. In the end, lawmakers deleted significant spending increases for both that had been inserted into a preliminary $1.8-trillion budget blueprint.
