MOVING UP: Arnold M. Eisen will take the helm of the Jewish Theological Seminary, making him the first chancellor in recent history who is not a rabbi.

In July 2007, Mr. Eisen, 54, will leave his post as chairman of the department of religion studies at Stanford University, where he was also a professor of Jewish culture and religion, the New York seminary announced last week. He will replace Ismar Schorsch, 70, who will step down this June after 20 years as chancellor. Mr. Schorsch
