Jefferson Lecture, Take 2: NEH Selects Civil War Historian for Honor
Having lost its bid to get President Clinton to deliver its prestigious Jefferson Lecture this year, the National Endowment for the Humanities has returned to tradition, tapping an eminent scholar, James M. McPherson, to deliver the annual address on the humanities.
Mr. McPherson is a history professor at Princeton University and an authority on the American Civil War. He won a Pulitzer Prize for history in 1989 for one of his books on the war, Battle Cry of Freedom (Oxford University
