Japan's Ph.D. Glut Leaves Many Jobless
The number of students in Japan who complete doctoral degrees has increased tenfold during the past decade, leading to a high unemployment rate, according to a report from the Japanese education ministry.
Approximately 14,500 students completed doctoral degrees last year, including 10,400 in the natural sciences.
Slightly more than half of the total were able to find jobs. Those in the natural sciences fared a bit better, with employment topping 60 percent.
