Japanese Education Ministry Plans to Modernize Graduate Schools
The Japanese education ministry is starting a five-year reform plan for graduate education that it says will release students from a system that requires them to serve almost as apprentices did in feudal times, and will instead encourage more original research.
The ministry also intends to restrain domineering professors and stimulate graduate schools to be more responsive to the needs of business and industry, according to a 25-page report issued this month.
