Chinese protesters showed their opposition this week to Japan's purchase of a disputed group of islands by wearing masks and Japanese costumes and holding a banner declaring that the islands belong to China. The dispute has already derailed several academic conferences.

A bitter territorial dispute between China and Japan is threatening academic ties between Asia's two largest economic powers.

Several conferences in Japan have already been canceled, and universities are bracing for more fallout if the dispute continues.

The dispute was triggered this month when the Japanese government announced it had purchased a remote chain of islets in the East China Sea, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. China has long claimed sovereignty
