Jane Jacobs, the author of a seminal work in urban studies and planning, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, died this morning in Toronto, where she had llived as an expatriate since the 1960s, the CBC reported. Ms. Jacobs was 89. The 1961 book criticized suburban development that robbed older cities of their economic vitality and urban-renewal projects that, she said, made them fit only for automobiles.
