Italy's Exploitation of Lecturers

Francis X. Rocca leaves a glaring hole in "University-Hiring Law Passes in Italy" (The Chronicle, November 11). He writes that opponents of the so-called Moratti Reform "complained that abolition of the permanent-researcher category would not occur until 2013 and argued that the new short-term research contract would make academic careers more precarious."

What Mr. Rocca failed to note is that Letizia Moratti introduced her reforms, and the Italian legislature
