Israeli Students Plan a Nationwide Strike, Starting Tuesday, to Protest College Costs

Students at all universities and colleges in Israel plan to go on strike, starting on Tuesday, to protest the rising cost of higher education, the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported. The students are demanding that the government restore more than $243-million in cuts from the higher-education budget, and that it withdraw an announced plan to raise tuition.

Leaders of student groups said that there was no limit for the duration of the strike, which would involve some 250,000 students, and that they were preparing for a lengthy fight. The planned strike has been coordinated with the lecturer associations, they said, and has the full support of faculty members, who oppose government proposals regarding their contracts and salaries. —Charles Huckabee
