The International Institute of Islamic Thought has withdrawn an offer of $1.5-million for a chair in religion at Temple University. The proposed donation was to honor a Temple professor of Islamic studies and comparative religion, Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub, but was withdrawn after the university hesitated over whether to accept the gift, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
The institute, a private nonprofit organization with headquarters in Herndon, Va., appeared to be the target of a post-9/11 government investigation into terrorism, but no charges were brought against it. The university released a statement saying that it felt the investigation was still active. The institute’s lawyer said there was no reason to believe there was an investigation. —David L.
