Is Success in Business a Qualification for Giving Advice to Academe?

James F. Carlin claims to present a recipe for "Restoring Sanity to an Academic World Gone Mad" (Point of View, November 5) by calling for radical shifts involving business-management techniques. ... However, Mr. Carlin makes a fundamental mistake that I doubt he would make in any of his successful businesses: With higher education, he proposes to trash its fundamental mission in a misguided effort to cure its ills. ...
