Irish Universities Cancel Events to Stop Spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease; Iran Allows Women to Study Abroad Using Government Scholarships; U. of Delhi Opens Teaching Jobs to 'Untouchables'
Hundreds of sporting, cultural, and other events have been canceled by Irish universities as a precaution against the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
The disease poses no threat to humans but can destroy herds of cattle, sheep, pigs, and goats. One case has been confirmed in Northern Ireland, and authorities in Dublin are determined that it will not spread across the border to the Republic.
