Internet2's Network Adopts New Protocol for Addressing and Packaging Data
Software designed to ensure the continued growth of the Internet is running on Abilene, the Internet2 backbone network, officials of the Internet2 consortium announced last month. Universities and corporations use Abilene for testing next-generation Internet technologies.
The new software is known as Internet Protocol version 6, or IPv6 for short. It is an improved version of the software used for packaging and routing data throughout the Internet.
