Indiana U. at Bloomington Expands Financial Aid for Needy Students

Indiana University at Bloomington has joined a growing list of universities that offer free tuition to students who are eligible for Pell Grants and who meet certain academic requirements. More than 500 in-state undergraduate students will benefit from the program next fall, university officials said on Friday in a written statement. To qualify, students must score 1150 or higher on the SAT and maintain a 3.0 grade-point average in college.

Several public flagships have announced or expanded similar programs in recent years, including the Universities of Minnesota, Virginia, and North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Those efforts follow a trend established at many elite private institutions.
