India Expands Quota System for Lower-Caste Students
India's Supreme Court this month upheld a 2006 law that allots 27 percent of all seats at national public higher-education institutions to poorer members of lower castes and classes.
Given that colleges here are already subject to other quotas, the ruling means that nearly half of all seats at Indian universities overseen by the national government will be reserved for students from the country's lowest castes and classes.
