In Student Evaluations, You Get What You Ask For

I appreciated Douglas Hilt's support for student evaluations and his accurate assessment of their value ("What Students Can Teach Professors: Reading Between the Lines of Evaluations," The Review, March 16).
Let's consider student evaluations from another perspective. Suppose students graded instructors at the end of the term, and those grades determined instructors' pay. In that case, astute instructors, recognizing the value attached to students' evaluations,
